What is the key to choosing an iPad instead of a computer? The reason why I chose the iPad Pro 11 inch with M1 --- iPad PC conversion course
There are four iPad models currently in the lineup. If you divide by screen size, there are two models of iPad Pro, 11 inches and 12.9 inches, so you will have to choose a product from a total of 5 models.
Where the iPad isn't enough
So why didn't you buy an iPad? In my case, the following four were the main reasons. 1) Not compatible with 2nd generation Apple Pencil 2) Port is still Lightning 3) Biometric is Touch ID instead of Face ID 4) Only compatible with Smart Keyboard 1) I'd like to elaborate on another article comparing the 1st and 2nd generation Apple Pencils, but the 1st generation is inevitably easy to use when calibrating by hand on PDF or drawing rough sketches. It's bad. Specifically, in the first generation, it is troublesome to insert it into the Lightning port and charge it, so when you want to use it, the Apple Pencil is often not charged, or because the shape is round, it rolls immediately The big neck is that it falls on the floor.
Regarding 2), when using a USB memory or power adapter, if Lightning remains, you will not be able to reuse the USB-C compatible peripherals and accessories used on Macs. Regarding 3), when you put the iPad on the desk and use it instead of the computer, it is troublesome to touch the home button to unlock it. Regarding 4), I had to pass the iPad because it would be more comfortable to use the Magic Keyboard equipped with a trackpad when creating documents.
In addition, I didn't want to buy a new iPad for more than a couple of years, so I think it's better to spend a little more money to buy a higher-end model in the long run, considering the following points that are inferior to other iPads. I did. 5) Older generation design with thick bezel and narrow display area 6) Rear camera is 8MP (12MP for other iPad series) 7) Wi-Fi is only compatible up to 11ac 8) Display is P3 , Full lamination, anti-reflective coating not supported Of course, new models of iPad will be released every year, so future models will have some improvements in the above points. If you don't care about these points at this point, plan to replace your iPad in a year or two, or buy it as your "first iPad" for the time being, you'll probably have enough iPad, but at least for me. Had to go through.
The iPad mini is a great device, but ...
In that case, the remaining options are iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro. Of these, the iPad mini usually clears the conditions that I made NG on the iPad, but it is not suitable for purchase due to the small screen size of 8.3 inches. I didn't reach it. After all, in order to use it as a main machine on a daily basis instead of a personal computer, it is easier to work on a large screen when performing various tasks.
However, the latest iPad mini is a model that just came out in the fall of 2021 like the iPad. It's not a cheap version of the iPad, the "mini" is just the size, and some specs have evolved significantly beyond the iPad Air. Also, because it is small, it has the great advantage of being "easy to carry". I use it only a little on the table every day, I often carry it around for work, people who do not mind using the Bluetooth keyboard when writing sentences, and other than work, for example, use it for specific purposes such as cars, kitchens, bedside, baths, etc. For those who want it, it may be the most versatile and most usable device. With other iPads, because of their size, they tend to stay on the counter. If you want to buy another iPad, it's definitely the iPad mini.
iPad Pro or Air?
Well, in the case of the author, I was finally worried about either the iPad Pro or the iPad Air, and finally I bought the iPad Pro 11 inch (3rd generation). The differences between the iPad Air and the iPad Pro are as follows. 1) Chip is A14 Bionic (iPad Pro is M1) 2) Touch ID (iPad Pro is Face ID) 3) 2 speakers (iPad Pro is 4 speakers) 4) Front camera is 7MP (iPad Pro is 12MP) 5) Rear camera Is 12MP wide angle only (iPad Pro is 12MP wide angle and 10MP super wide angle) 6) Camera specifications are a little old such as not supporting center frame 7) Display is not compatible with ProMotion 8) LiDAR scanner is not installed 9) Thunderbolt / USB4 not compatible iPad The price difference between the Air and the iPad Pro 11 inch is about 25,000 yen because the cheapest 64GB model iPad Air is 69,080 yen and the cheapest 128GB iPad Pro 11 inch is 94,800 yen. How the above difference looks against this price difference will vary greatly from person to person. Some people think that the iPad Pro is the latest M1 chip and doubles the storage, so that alone is worth the price difference, but all points 1) to 9) are over-engineered and not necessary, and it is not worth 25,000 yen. Some people should think.
In my case, I prefer the iPad Pro 11 inch, especially considering that it is Face ID, it is compatible with the center frame (although it may not be used much), and the other specifications are good overall. Based on the judgment that it was safe, I decided to spend an additional 25,000 yen. However, there are times when I'm happy with the iPad Air after purchase, so it's really difficult to make a decision about this.
By the way, the price of 12.9 inches of iPad Pro is 129,800 yen for the cheapest 128GB model, so it is about 60,000 yen difference compared to iPad Air. The specifications of the iPad Pro 11 inch and 12.9 inch are the same except for the display size, so while I was attracted to the large screen, I decided that the price difference of 60,000 yen was too big, and 12.9 inch passed. bottom.
Very satisfied with the iPad Pro 11 inch
In this way, for me, I got the iPad Pro 11 inch (3rd generation) as a new iPad for the first time in a long time. The color is silver, the storage is 128GB (256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB can be selected), the Wi-Fi model (Wi-Fi + cellular model is plus 18,000 yen), and the price is 94,800 yen. The total price is 145,730 yen, including the 2nd generation Apple Pencil (15,950 yen) and Magic Keyboard (34,980 yen). Even if the price of the iPad itself is less than 100,000 yen, if you add accessories like this, the price will well exceed the MacBook Air (starting at 115,280 yen), so the output that matches it is this iPad. I have to get Pro to put it out.
It's been about a week since I bought it, but for now, it's more than enough to be used as a main machine instead of a personal computer, and I'm very satisfied. What surprised me especially was the M1 chip. It's on par with the M1's MacBook Air, and whatever you do, it's faster than ever (I'll talk about speed comparisons with the M1's MacBook Air in another article). In addition, the Magic Keyboard and the 2nd generation Apple Pencil are extremely easy to use. From now on, I will write articles in this series based on this iPad Pro 11 inch, so please look forward to it.
