　簡単に言えばコンピューターと情報通信で生産効率と品質を高めることです。まず、これまで人が行っていたことをコンピューターで置き換えます。さらに、多くのデータを集積し、そこから不良の早期発見、置換に加え、新たな付加価値を引き出します。この循環サイクルをサイバー・フィジカル・システム(CPS)と呼びます。ドイツはインダストリー4.0、米国はインダストリアル・インターネット・コンソーシアム(IIC)、日本はソサエティー5.0の中でIoTコンソーシアムを形成してCPSに取り組んでいます。

　 冒頭で説明した共通電子辞書が国際標準規格として整備されれば、物理層レベルにとどまっていた製品管理を関係者がサイバー上で情報を交換し合い、ライフサイクル全体にわたって確実に管理できるようになります。こうしたCPS、デジタルツインの実現には5Gの導入が大いに期待されます。ただ、本気でやるのであれば、やはり情報処理技術を身につけなければなりません。

　コンピューター、情報通信、ソフトウエアの知識が必要です。日本ではIoTコンソーシアムの中に種々の取り組みがあり、その一つとしてIoT人材分科会を設置し、私が分科会長を務めています。総務省の支援により、民間のIoT人材の育成とともに、ハッカソンによる活動も進めています。また、モバイルコンピューティング推進コンソーシアム(MCPC)ではIoTの検定試験を実施しています。学会レベルでは例えば電子情報通信学会が電子電気系ECE(高度技術者人材育成)プログラムを推進しています。
