Is the communication speed of the best-selling "iPhone XR" and LTE slightly low-key-- OpenSignal survey-- CNET Japan

In Apple's "iPhone" series, the relatively cheap "iPhone XR" is currently considered to be the best seller. However, Apple seems to have underestimated the quality of some features on this model. That's a modem.

OpenSignal's survey shows that when using 4G mobile lines in the United States, iPhone XR downloads data at an average speed of 17.6 Mbps. By comparison, "iPhone XS" is 20.5 Mbps and "iPhone XS Max" is 21.7Mbp.

Not only that, iPhone XR downloads are slower than the "iPhone X" launched in 2017. The average speed of IPhone X is 18.5 Mbps.

However, although slower than expensive models, it is much faster than "iPhone5s", "iPhone6" and "iPhoneSE". The download speeds of these models over 4G lines are 10-12.8 Mbps. If you are concerned about the speed of smartphone communication, this fact will be one of the reasons to upgrade to Phone XR.

OpenSignal found that iPhone models can be divided into three groups according to their download speed. "iPhone XS" and "iPhone XS Max" are 26% faster than the intermediate groups, including "iPhone 6s", "iPhone 7", "iPhone 8", "iPhone X" and "iPhone XR", and 83% faster than the lowest speed group.

The speed is different because the old "iPhone" is equipped with early 4G technology and does not support new technologies deployed by large US communications operators Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

IPhone XS and XS Max are the fastest because they are equipped with modems that support LTE category 16. On the other hand, iPhone6s, iPhone7, and iPhone8 have modems corresponding to categories 6-12.

OpenSignal also confirmed that there is no difference in 4G speed between the Plus model and the ordinary model. Large models seem to have more room to install high-performance antennas, but at almost the same speed as small models.

According to a survey released by OpenSignal in September 2018, LTE downloads for iPhone users in the United States are slower than those of "Android" owners.

Globally, both positions will be reversed. LTE download speeds are 15.7 Mbps for IPhone owners and 13.8 Mbps for Android devices.

However, if you focus only on the main Android devices (which are more purchased in the United States), the LTE speed is 23.9 Mbps, much faster than iPhone's average LTE speed.
