Looking back on the delivery live with the album "BAD Mode" for the first time in 3 years and 7 months, a time to face Utada Hikaru in one -on -one.

Hikaru Utadaという人間と1対1で向き合うような時間だった。前作『初恋』から3年7ヵ月ぶりのリリースとなった8枚目のアルバム『BADモード』の発売日であり、宇多田の39歳の誕生日でもある1月19日に配信された初の有料オンラインライブ『Hikaru Utada Live Sessions from Air Studios』だ。

パンデミック以降、多くのアーティストが新しいライブの在り方として配信という手法を取り入れるようになったが、個人的に、Hikaru Utadaの配信ライブとして強く記憶に残っているのは、約10年前、2010年に活動休止前の最後のライブとして開催された横浜アリーナでの公演だ（パソコンの回線が弱く何度かフリーズしながら見たのをよく覚えている）。当時、今回と同じように全世界で配信されたライブは大きな話題を呼んだが、いま振り返ってみると、なんて先鋭的な試みだっただろうと改めて思う。あのときは満員のアリーナ会場に、様々な演出と共に見せた圧巻のショーが印象的だった。だが、今回は違う。宇多田が活動の拠点にしているロンドンのスタジオで、最新作『BADモード』の楽曲を中心に演奏したアットホームなライブには、ライティングによるわずかな装飾の類すらない。あるのは辣腕のプレイヤー陣による演奏と宇多田の歌だけだった。だが、それで十分だったのだ。“いまをいかに生きるか”という内省的なテーマが通底する『BADモード』という作品には、その表現方法がとても似合っていた。

With seven support musicians, including Banmas bassist Jodi Milliner, the live started with Utada stepping into the studio. Casual clothes with white shirts and black pants. Utada, who stood in front of the microphone, stretched his body a lot and turned his shoulders. When I uttered a little bit like "key, key, key", a smile spilled into the studio. The first song is the opening track "BAD Mode" on the album. Utada's ephemeral and transparent vocals rolled lightly, putting a tribal beat, soft synth phrase, and astringent saxophone. "Both in great shape and in BAD mode / I want to see you." The phrase that can be said to be the core of the album is conveyed comfortably. The sound of the synth overlaps like a rhythm instrument, and the song "Sin Evangelion Theatrical Version" is the theme song "ONE LAST KISS", which is a low -pitched range from the low range to the treble range. Go to the theme song "Kimi to Kimi" of the drama "Beloved" to listen to the wide range of singing. Occasionally, Utada will shake the body slowly and spin the melody, as if to close his eyes and leave himself to the performance.

ライブ中、特に目を引いたのがプレイヤーの人数よりも圧倒的に多いシンセサイザーの数だった。3人のキーボーディストが楽曲ごとにそれらを使いわけることで、シーケンスは極力使わず（一部、宇多田自身のコーラスを流す楽曲はあるが）、徹底して生音にこだわった緻密なグルーヴを人力で生み出していく。ベース、ドラム、パッカーションによる土台のリズムは、前作『初恋』で顕著だった先鋭的なアプローチがさらに洗練され、記名性の高い宇多田のメロディと美しく噛み合っていた。そんな2022年型にアップデートされたHikaru Utadaを象徴していたのが「誰にも言わない」だった。幾重にも重なり合い、言いようのない陶酔感を生む音像のなかで渋いサックスの調べを伴いながら、ひらひらと舞う花びらのようにメロディが流れ落ちていく。Hikaru Utadaにしか作れない世界観に息を呑んだ。

After finishing four songs, Utada showed a short word with the support musicians to share the response so far.Following the full -length English lyrics "Find Love", which is full of playfulness, to the melody Japanese lyrics "Time" reminiscent of the initial song.In the past, there were many works that strongly felt the commitment to expressing it in Japanese, but this work is free to come and go for both Japanese lyrics and English lyrics.There is no barrier to the genre, and at that moment, it is the current mode of Utada to freely choose expressions that fit your emotions at that moment.

The live is already in the second half. "PINK BLOOD", which was performed on the seventh song, was wonderful in the famous performance that time passed. No intro. Singing with a piano accompaniment, the phrase "PINK BLOOD" is repeated many times in a detailed sound that intertwines the guitar and multiple synths with a hard beat. The phrase that Utada spins tightly and spun in Japanese lyrics is that it is useless to be cherished by people who do not understand my value. The idea that you should value what you think is "beautiful", not someone's values. When I listened to this song, I realized why Utada wanted to named this album as "BAD mode" instead of "GOOD mode". Accept, forgive, and love you. Nevertheless, the work "BAD Mode" will tell you that continuing to go is to live.

今回のアルバムのなかではもっとも古い楽曲となる、ゲームソフト『キングダムハーツⅢ』のオープニングテーマ「Face My Fears（English Version）」はピアノを軸にした生々しい音像でドラマチックかつダークな世界観が描き出した。昨年、映画『シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版』のエンディング曲として新たに生まれ変わった「Beautiful World (Da Capo Version)」では、アコースティックギター1本と歌のみではじまった演奏がやがて豊かなバンドサウンドへと広がっていく。そんなふうに、Hikaru Utadaの人生と共に歩んできたと言ってもいいような幸福なコラボレーションによって生まれた楽曲たちが披露された終盤のタームは、2004年にUtada名義でリリースした世界デビューアルバム『EXODUS』からの「Hotel Lobby」と「About Me」で締めくくられた。いずれも生の質感を大切にしたアレンジにいまの宇多田だからこその優しく力強い歌声がのる。この2曲を選んだ理由は、もちろん国内外のファンに向けて、意外な曲をやるというサービス精神もあっただろうが、今回のアルバム『BADモード』のテーマ性に近しいものがあったからではないかと思った。本当の自分の姿を打ち明ける「About Me」という曲では、ちょっと不思議なメロディラインで《Up and down and down down down down we go》と歌われる。上がっては下がって、下がって、下がって、下がって、下がって、私たちは進んでゆく。それこそ、まさに“BADモード”だ。

すべての演奏を終えたあと、メンバー同士で拍手を送り合うと、ふっと安堵したように宇多田の表情がゆるんだ。最後はカメラに向かって視聴者に英語と日本語で感謝を伝えた。「今回はふつうの会場みたいなライブはできなかったけど、こういうふうにやることによって、ふだんは共有できない（心の）奥のほうの特別な空間を初めて共有できたような気がします」。その気持ちは聴いている側も同じだった。たとえ物理的にひとつの場所を共有していなくとも、心の奥底で共鳴するような深いリスニング体験がそこにあったからだ。それを可能にしたのは『BADモード』という、“生きること”の本質を、どこまでも平熱の温度感で見事に炙り出した最新アルバムの存在が何よりも大きかった。人間の心そのものを音楽にしていく。いまのHikaru Utadaはそんな新しいフェーズにいるのかもしれない。
