[Kazuhisa Nishikawa's irregular column] Try 5G compatible smartphone "OPPO A55s 5G" in the early 30,000 yen range-PC Watch

Snapdragon 480/4GB/64GB but also 5G and eSIM compatible

Punch-hole front camera in the upper left corner of the screen. 90% screen occupancy. The one that arrived with a narrow border is black. Group of cameras on the upper left

Looking at the company's website, the current 5G compatible devices are "OPPO Find X3 Pro", "OPPO Find X2 Pro", "OPPO Reno5 A", "OPPO Reno3 5G", "OPPO A54 5G" etc. (I don't know if it's 5G compatible at a glance, so I want a 5G mark or something). And it will be "OPPO A55s 5G" to be introduced this time.

The model name is close to OPPO A54 5G, and the SoCo, memory, storage, and panel size are the same, and the specs are also very similar. However, the OPPO A54 5G has a wide-angle/ultra-wide-angle/macro/monochrome rear camera and a 5,000mAh battery, which is more than the OPPO A55s 5G. In any case, both are entry class in terms of composition.

The OPPO A55s 5G has other parts simple, and it seems that it is dustproof and waterproof, eSIM compatible, and equipped with an FM radio. The main specifications are as follows.

SoC is Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G. Since it is a 4 series, it is an entry class. 2 x 2GHz + 1.8GHz x 6 with 8 cores. Includes Adreno 619 as GPU. A long time ago, the 4 series had an image of being slow, but as far as the benchmark test described later is concerned, although it is slow compared to the high/middle class, it has risen to a level that is not so practical.

Memory is 4GB (LPDDR4x @ 2133MHz), storage is eMMC 64GB. The OS is equipped with Android 11-based ColorOS 11. Compared to stock Android, it's a much customized OS, and it feels a little like iOS.

The display is 6.5 type 2,400 x 1,080 (FHD+) dots. 90% screen occupancy, up to 90Hz, color gamut: 96% NTSC/100% DCI-P3. It's not OLED, but it's pretty good for the price.

The network is Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, Nano SIM card slot x 2 + eSIM (SIM2/eSIM are exclusive). Please see the table for the corresponding band, but it is 5G compatible. eSIM support is a high point. It's a pity that it doesn't support NFC/Osaifu-Keitai and it's not Wi-Fi 6, but it's also a part of the price that can't be helped.

The interface is USB 2.0 Type-C, 3.5mm jack, microSD card slot, FM radio compatible with Japanese frequencies. The microSD card slot is exclusive with one Nano SIM slot. The speaker is monaural.

Nano SIM / microSD card slot on the left side, volume ± button. 3.5mm jack on the bottom side, Type-C, power button on the right side of the speaker. There is nothing on the upper side, SIM1 in the back, SIM2 / microSD card in front. You can see the dustproof and waterproof packing

Equipped with a magnetic sensor, proximity sensor, optical sensor, acceleration sensor, gyro sensor, step count function, and face authentication (front camera). Position information corresponds to GNSS: GPS/Beidou/GLONASS/GALILEO/QZSS.

The camera has about 8 million pixels on the front (F value 2.0). Wide angle on the back: about 13 million pixels (F value 2.2, FOV 80 °, 5P lens, AF compatible), depth: about 2 million pixels. In other words, the rear is only wide-angle. Since there is a depth sensor, portrait mode (background blur) works even for people other than people.

The size is about 74.7 x 8.2 x 162.1mm (width x thickness x height, thinnest part), weight about 178g. Color variations are black and green. It supports dustproof and waterproof IP68, and the battery is 4,000mAh (not compatible with fast charging). The price is 33,800 yen.

Although it supports 5G/eSIM/IP68, there are no Osaifu-Keitai, speaker monaural, rear single camera, no quick charging support, etc. In addition to the Snapdragon 480, the only downside is the price. If you add a little more, OPPO Reno5 A with all Snapdragon 765G / 6GB / 128GB (but the speaker is monaural) will also come into view. Whether this "a little" is a little or not a little depends on your budget and usage.

Actual measurement is 182g (it is a little heavier than the specification because the protective film is already installed) Only the transparent case and the eject pin. Comparison with Xperia 1 II (about 72 x 7.9 x 166 mm / 181 g) without AC adapter or USB cable. The footprint is one size larger than the Xperia 1 II. The height is almost the same (except for the camera protrusion). It doesn't feel particularly luxurious, but it doesn't feel cheap either. The black on the back is matte, so fingerprint marks are not noticeable. Is it normal (lighter) if it is 6.5 type and weighs 182g? As you can see from the photo of the door, it's not compact, but it's thin and fits comfortably in your hand (my hands are small for a man).

Punch-hole front camera on the upper left of the screen. The screen occupancy rate is 90% and the border is narrow as it is. Camera group on the upper left on the back. Nano SIM / microSD card slot on the left side, volume ± button. 3.5mm jack, Type-C, speaker on the bottom side. Place the power button on the right side. nothing on the top side. The Nano SIM slot has SIM1 in the back, SIM2/microSD card in the front, and dustproof and waterproof packing in the front. I will explain the camera later, so please refer to it.

Only the transparent case and eject pin are included. Please note that AC adapter and USB cable are not included. The protective film is shipped already installed, and the photos posted are taken as they are (weight).

The 6.5-inch display is bright with a maximum brightness of 550cd/m2, and has good color development, viewing angles, and contrast. However, when compared with OLED, there is a difference in the tightness of black. Supports refresh rate up to 90Hz. You can also adjust the color temperature in the settings.

Fever didn't bother me in the range I tried (although it may be seasonal). As for the sound, although the output from the speaker is monaural, it has power and is quite noisy even at 50%. When I listened to the output from the 3.5mm jack on my SONY MDR-EX800ST, it was crisp but powerful, and the bass drum was approaching. Considering the price, it's pretty good.

According to the specification, the Bluetooth audio codec is HFP/HSP/OPP/HID/A2DP/aptX/aptX HD/SBC/AAC/LDAC/AVRCP/PBAP/PAN(PAN - NAP)/PAN(PANU)/MAP handle.
