Rakuten Mobile will change the operating specifications of the iPhone (iOS) version of the "Rakuten Link" app from June 15th. IPhone users using the app need to be careful about voice calls and SMS (short messages) exchanges with people who are not using the app (including landlines).

The behavior when there is an incoming call to Rakuten Mobile's mobile phone number is changed as follows.

After changing the specifications, calls made from other than the Rakuten Link app, such as mobile phones and landlines of other companies, will be received using the iOS standard "phone" app. There is no change in the specifications when making a call from the Rakuten Link app.

If you make a call back with the Rakuten Link app, the call charge is free (*) as before, but if you make a call back with the iOS standard phone app, you will be charged the specified call charge, so be careful.

(*) Excludes calls to phone numbers starting with "0570" and "0180" (other companies' connection services) and calls to 188 (consumer hotline).

Incoming calls from people who do not use Rakuten Link cannot be answered by the Rakuten Link app.

With this specification change, calls when you are overseas will also be received using the iOS standard phone app. Therefore, please note that incoming call charges (pay-as-you-go) will be charged according to the country / region.

At the moment, if you are abroad, you cannot receive calls with the phone app. It seems that it will be handled by the specification change date.

After changing the specifications, incoming calls while staying abroad will be made using the phone app.Along with that, the incoming call amount set for each country / region will be charged.

The SMS exchanges with people who are not using the Rakuten Link app will be changed as follows.

After changing the specifications, SMS with people who are not using Rakuten Link will be sent and received using the iOS standard "Messages" app. Rakuten Link There is no change in the specifications for exchanging messages between users.

You will not be able to use the Rakuten Link app to exchange messages with users who are not using Rakuten Link.

Due to this specification change, a "sending fee" will be required to send SMS to mobile phone users who are not using the Rakuten Link app. The transmission fee is as follows.

Even if you are abroad, you can receive SMS for free. However, at the moment, if you are overseas, you cannot send or receive SMS with the message app. As with the telephone, it is expected that it will be handled by the specification change date.

As the Rakuten Link app becomes unavailable, sending charges will be incurred when sending SMS to people who do not use Rakuten Link. SMS reception charges will continue to be free.However, at this time, it is not possible to send and receive SMS using the message app overseas.

Due to this specification change, it may not be possible to send and receive SMS on iPhones with iOS 14.4 or earlier. Update to iOS 14.4 or above by June 14th and apply the latest carrier settings.

According to Rakuten Mobile, this specification change is due to "technical reasons". I asked the company's public relations department about the circumstances, but it seems that the details are not disclosed.

There is no such specification change for the Android version of the Rakuten Link app.
